Katayoun Pasban Dowlatshahi

I am an Iranian-born British artist working in contemporary photographic art, drawing, architectural glass and time based media. Trained in Edinburgh,Winchester and Barcelona with a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Gloucestershire, I have worked on a number of national and international residencies, exhibitions and have a number of public realm commissions across the UK. At present I am working on three significant public commissions
in Bletchley, adjacent to Bletchley Park, Gloucester Docks and Canterbury city centre.

I am currently exploring the theme ‘liminal’ in my studio practice. By taking double exposed photographs of the fells in the Lake District on traditional film, and by working these images up into a mirrored companion drawing, I create an illusion of an apex with surrounding vistas that could never exist. They evoke memories of the mountain in whose shadow I lived under as a child whilst growing up in Iran. It is intrinsically associated to feelings of joy, loss and longing. This is an ongoing fascination I have with ‘land’ and ‘light’, ‘paradise’ and ‘the garden’. I was recently awarded an Arts Council England
Award for research and development to aid me in the production of new work based on the theme ‘Liminal’ for forthcoming solo shows in Northampton and Portsmouth.

For a number of years I have worked on significant public realm commissions using both photographic and drawn imagery. In public commissions I place a great deal of importance on research into context, history and community. Therefore, the visual content and outcome for each project and commission is unique. I work with specialist glass and steel sub contractors, architects and engineers to produce these site specific artworks. Recent projects include
glazing for a sanctuary in a new PFI Community Hospital in Newton Abbot; a commission by Hammerson to produce art work for a series of 10 integral light boxes on three elevations in the new development in Leicester City Centre and ‘Exeter Traceries’ another significant commission for the front façade of a glazed pavilion completed in late 2007 for the new development at Princesshay in Exeter City Centre. This commission formed the centre piece of
the development.
